Race Results

Congratulations to Allison V. who scored a FIS SL 79-point race today up at Sunday River. Down at Bromley, Kristie R. placed 6th and Kelly R. came in 15th to round out the first sheet. Though the field was small, we're banking on seeing everyone make significant upward movement tomorrow.

On the drive home, we stopped off at a neat, little farm stand so the girls could feed apples to the horses.

Women Race at Sunday River, Bromley, and Okemo

The KMS J1/2 Women's Team finished up a cold, but highly productive, week of training at Killington. Winter has officially set up shop, and we hope it decides to stay for the duration. This weekend, Senior Danielle M. and Junior Allison V. are competing in SL and GS Eastern Cup races at Sunday River in Maine. The rest of the team, including Anne C., Brittany A., Emma F., Kristie R., Kelly R., Kara V., Lisa S., and Katie B. head to Bromley on Saturday for a Vermont Cup SL and Okemo on Sunday for a George Tormey Series GS. Best of luck to all our racers competing the next few days!

First Race

First race day jitters are now officially behind us. Stratton's marquee GS hooked and turned its way down North American, and so did our KMS J1/2 Women's Team. An unexpected snowstorm dominated second run, and we had an eventful--but safe--return drive to Killington. Everyone is now pumped up for tomorrow's slalom which should bring noteworthy results. Remember to follow along with same-time action at www.live-timing.com!

Women Take It On The Road

We'll be heading to our GS race venue at 10:30 tomorrow morning to get some afternoon gate training in preparation for this weekend's GS & SL races at Stratton. We're very excited about this amazing opportunity. Get a good night's rest, girls!

Slalom Training at Killington

We've been fortunate enough to have slalom training at Killington the past two days. Photos to be posted shortly. Our plan is to train slalom again tomorrow (Wed), take Thursday off, and then prepare for the still scheduled Sunday race at Stratton the rest of the week. All of the girls are in excellent spirits, and we are happy that winter finally seems here to stay.

Team East Skis NH & Learns History All In One Day

As Team East learned yesterday, NH and VT are not the same state despite the fact that there are no quality radio stations in either of those places. We headed out before sunrise on a journey to Bretton Woods, NH.
Lisa, Brit, Katie, and Kelly pose at the top of the lift.

Brit, Katie, and Kelly after a looooong day of skiing.

After skiing for four hours, we decided it was time to head home. But a car ride home just isn't the same without an adventure. Since the girls had missed classes for the day to go skiing in a faraway land, there was still some learning to be had. So we made it a point to stop at every historical (or as Brittney renamed them "hysterical") landmark on the way back to Vermont.

We learned about towns that no longer exist.

And homemade kilns where people once made coal.

But best of all was Bath, NH, where we learned about the founder of the town and his daughter, Mercy, who planted a garden on top of this weird rock by carrying dirt in her apron to the top of the ladder. The girls climbed the rock to check out Mercy's pumpkin garden. All-in-all, not a bad day... skiing, learning, and pumpkin gardens galore.

Team East Climbs High & Heads to NH

With the weather in Killington still not entirely on our side, Team East made another journey to Rutland for some core training at Green Mountain Rock Climbing. Brit, Kelly, Lisa, and Katie had a blast tackling the bouldering walls and a series of higher top-rope routes. Everyone learned to safely climb and belay using a Grigri. Kelly and Brit continued with their silly voices and ridiculous antics, and everyone appreciated the help of Steve and Dave, the climber-dude aficionados who were working today.

Tomorrow, we head further East to Bretton Woods in NH to ski... on snow... down a mountain. Woohoo!!!

A Cloudy Day in Mammoth Looks Like...

We are still enjoying the sunshine and firm snow; the girls are working hard and making great strides in their skiing. Days are filled with training and studying, working on equipment and doing dryland workouts, then we find time for food and video. I love everyone's effort!

Pine Hill Park Scavenger Hunt

Team East decided to kick the Killington Blues with a road trip to scenic Rutland. We embarked on Pine Hill Park for a scavenger hunt of epic proportions. Before we split up in the woods, we gathered for a lesson on map reading and some prime group photo opps.

Kelly, Brit, & Lisa learn how to read the trail map.

Brit, Kelly, & Lisa pose on one of the infamous Pine Hill Park bridges.

Kelly & Brit demonstrate the support a teammate should offer when one attempts a brilliant leap off a steep cliff.

Team East then embarked on a wild scavenger hunt to the top of Strong Angel and then out to the suspension bridge on Overlook. Afterward, Kelly described the conditioning experience: "It was so cool. I felt like I was on 'The Amazing Race'."
Finally, we concluded with a snowball fight using the Zamboni shavings from Giorgetti Ice Rink.

Team East is certainly deserving of some creativity points for finding ways to keep fit and have fun despite a lack of optimal training weather. Keeping our fingers crossed for snow very soon!

Team East Skis KTown

Early morning skiing at Killington was as good as could be expected given recent weather patterns. Bluebird days aren't exclusive to Colorado and California. Every so often, the heavens clear and blue sky shines through in the fine state of Vermont. Lisa S., Brit A., Kelly R., and special guest Jill B. ripped it up on Rime this morning for a handful of free runs.

Brit A., Jill B., and Kelly R. smile from the lift on a beautiful Sunday.

Team East Skates to Sushi

Not everyone is lucky enough to travel to Mammoth at 2:30am. Some of us had to stay behind, hit up Public Skating at Union Arena in Woodstock and then get our fill of Chinese and Japanese at Sushi Yoshi.

With rain outside, Team East hit the rink and spent 2 hours this afternoon learning to hockey stop, skate backwards, change direction, increase momentum, and skate circles. We would have pictures to post if Kelly's camera battery didn't die every time we tried to take a photo.

But there IS evidence of the Team East dinner at Sushi Yoshi. Special guests Coach Greg and J3 Kate F. tagged along because they wanted to be in the presence of greatness.

How goes it with Team West? You guys make it to Mammoth yet? Sweet dreams to all once you arrive!

Lon & Feef Can't Stand The Anticipation

Come on, girls!! It's time to come to KMS. Lon is doing backflips into split squats just thinking about your arrival. The Women's Alpine Office is lonely. We are looking forward to everyone's arrival in the coming days. Get your skis shined up, grab a stick of Juicy Fruit, and come on up to school. Love, Feef.

France Camp = Verrrrrrry Niiiiiice

The KMS Women's Alpine Team embarked on Les Deux Alpes, France for two weeks of intensive glacial training in the month of July. This became our home mountain for fifteen miraculous days of technical work.

We learned to ride T-bars. Sort of. Some of us (like Ali, maybe?!) even did amazing tricks on the T-bars which may or may not have led to important pieces of equipment being temporarily lost or displaced.

Lon imparted his words of widsom on the team when we weren't busy eating Haribo gummi bears at the top of the lane.

A trip to the Venosc Adventure Parc provided an entertaining, total body workout prior to our second day off snow.

The ladies pose with Clarke the Travel Shark in front of fabulous Hotel Le Souleil Or. We will miss Alex, Nicholai, and all the wonderful croissants.

In all seriousness, our summer training camp in Les Deux Alpes proved to be crucial in the development of those athletes who attended. We accomplished more on-snow in fifteen days than many athletes and teams accomplish in an entire preparation period. Now it's time to hit the dryland extra hard so that we do not lose any athletic gains already made and so that we better condition ourselves for development at the next on-snow camp.

I had an awesome time getting to know Lon, Danielle, Ali, Kristie, and reuniting with Kelly.

See y'all at August Dryland Camp. Boo-ra-ra!

Tough Time Finding A Gym?

It can be hard to find a gym to use in order to keep up with dryland training over the summer since most private clubs are pricey and some even set age restrictions for unsupervised workouts. Chances are, your home school has a gym with a sufficient weight room and track to get the job done. If you check with your school's Athletic Director (AD) or the head coach of a team that trains in the summer (soccer & football usually do at most schools), you may be able to use your home school's gym while one of those teams are training and a coach is present. That equals free gym time and no excuse to not be following the summer dryland routine. Git 'er done.
